Hiv(e) aimed to balance artists personal poetic and creative concerns with a commitment to provide practical solutions to the needs of Gozololo, a shelter for Aids orphans in Natal. The project involved six contemporary artists and was largely a collaborative effort.
The first phase of the project involved producing work at the shelter in Kwa-Mashu. My work at Gozololo was to prepare and plant a food garden with members of the Gozololo community, which has flourished.
The second phase of the project took the shape of an exhibition at franchise gallery in Johannesburg of work that echoed the interventions at the original site. For the exhibition I painted a layer of mud from the garden on the gallery floor, and installed photographs mapping of the garden at Gozololo. The work was titled ‘For a short while.’
